Sukhoi Su-27
Designed during the 1970s, the Su-27 was introduced into the Soviet Air Force in the mid-1980s, but by that time, the Soviet Union was in decline and would eventually collapse on December 26, 1991.
This led to its successor, the Russian Federation, developing various projects to complement the original, such as the Su-30, the Su-33, Su-34 attack aircraft, and the Su-37, among others.
Other projects included carrier-based variants and the Shenyang J-11, which was built and flown by the Chinese Air Force.
Furthermore, Flankers remained in service with other nations around the world, from Angola to Vietnam, and from Indonesia to Kazakhstan.
Although the Su-27 remains quite common in various post-Soviet states, hundreds of Flankers were used by both sides in the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian War in air-to-air combat or in support of ground offensives.
While the outcome of the ongoing war is not yet visible at this time, it appears likely that the Flanker will continue to grace the skies in the years to come.
